[Issue 128132] New: Would be useful to be able to multiply overstrike (transparently overlay) a symbol

https://bz.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=128132

          Issue ID: 128132
        Issue Type: DEFECT
Summary: Would be useful to be able to multiply overstrike
                    (transparently overlay) a symbol
           Product: Writer
           Version: 4.1.6
          Hardware: PC
                OS: Windows 10
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: Normal
          Priority: P5 (lowest)
         Component: formatting
          Assignee: issues@openoffice.apache.org
          Reporter: lpfeffer@gmail.com
  Target Milestone: ---

Would be useful to be able to multiply overstrike (transparently overlay) a
symbol.

Ideally for an overlay symbol the font type, size and position (under, center,
over the "base symbol") would be specifiable.

If some symbols don't exist, you could create your own font that embed these.

But for me, AutoText as workaround is enough.
A new feature must interest a large number of people.
So you could set back to unconfirmed status and wait if a developer can have a
look.

AutoText can insert some draws and not only text.
So, you can build this kind of symbol.

Remember that is a bug tracking system and not a help desk.
If you have some questions to use such feature, you could:
- read help file (F1 key)
- consult our Wiki or tutorials about this
- go to our forum or users mailing list

I don't understand what you means.
Please provide a sample document and 2 screenshots to see actual and expected
behavior.

Once all, set status back to unconfirmed

Can you send a sample with the examples I gave earlier?

Perhaps I misunderstand AutoText. I see it as a shortcut to something that
OpenOffice can do and can't by itself implement typographic effects not
available in OO.

The idea is to be able to type over (overstrike) a symbol one or multiple times
- showing thew "base" symbol and the overstriking symbols in the same character
position. In such case technically the "cursor" is backspaced after each
overstruck symbol so the next symbol overlays it. This was used in the
1960-s/1970-s with the IBM Selectric Typewriter and other printers to type APL
(a programming language) operators. Such printers had a backspace function
which mechanically backspaced to before the last symbol typed. "Chain printers"
had a similar capability for overprinting - the paper could be prevented from
moving to the next line so characters could be overprinted. One use of this was
to underline or create a "bold" effect.

Imagine say O overprinted with =. The = would be in middle of O. Or S
overprinted with |. That would be similar to a $ sign.

= overstruck by / and then \ would be = with sort of a large X over it.

A more powerful capability would be to say print a small character right over
or under another, similar to the way superscript and subscript is handled, but
right above oir below the base character.

Sketch of suggested character overstrike capability

Right column after vertical bar shows suggested effect of overprinting
characters to the left.

Please note: this is an enhancement effect and I can't show relevant OpenOffice
screen shots etc. since the suggested capability does NOT exist in OO.

If symbol overstrike would be implemented (a suggested feature) it should be
ability to type the symbols to be overlaid, marking them and invoke some menu
item for OVERSTRIKE. It should NOT be by graphics drawing the effect, which is
very cumbersome and generally not high quality. Also, note that if the
overstrike ability would be implemented as suggested above the composite symbol
could be cast in any supported font, any size, bold italics, underline, etc.

Of course one can "draw" an overstruck symbol set and create for it a font, but
that is not possible for most users.
