Open Office becoming impossible to use- bug ridden
In the last 2-3 months, it has become increasingly difficult to use both spreadsheets and text documents. I add something minimal and the blue circle pops up and I get the message “Not Responding”. Sometimes that stops after 5 minutes or so and I can continue and sometimes it continues for 30 minutes so I have to use Task Manager to “End Task” and start over. Have others experienced this? I don’t know if the has been an “improvement” made to OpenOffice that is causing this or it has been hacked and malware inserted or what. Perhaps I will erase my copy and import a new one to see if that helps anything.

See https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?t=99158, for example, for instructions on resetting your profile. You will lose any customizations that are stored in the profile, but sometimes they become corrupted.

I'm not sure I did what you asked. I renamed the folder in which OpenOffice is located, the that is not the application file that starts the program. I don't know where to find that, it that's what I was supposed to rename. Anyway, this didn't work. It seemed to work for part of a day and then is started freezing again Now I can't even start it. I'll have to erase it and download a fresh copy.

rename folder %appdata%\OpenOffice\4 (windows)

I don't know if you received any reply, I haven't seen any on the list.
To clarify, I have one question: Do you by any chance use Base as well,
i.e. do you have a database open when working on the other documents? If
so, you need to make sure that changes to the database (e.g. forms or
fields changes) are being saved, else this may lead to a tremendous lag.
Saving the database is different from changing changes to the contents
of a field. You have to go to the general database window and choose
save from the menu (or click on the save icon).
Beyond that, I have not experienced such issues, but I am using Linux
and not Windows.
In any case: if there is malware involved, it hasn't come from
OpenOffice, at least not from the package, if you installed it from the
official website. There are many ways malware can become active on your
PC, mostly it's via an email, but it can also be via a document (macros)
etc.. If Malware causes the problems, it's most likely not helpful to
reinstall OpenOffice, but you should then use a good virus and malware
scanner to identify and remove it.
Regards,
Martin
