hasAttributes() on Node object is not found!

I am trying to use the latest Xerces DOM API and I have found a big problem.  
Any call made to hasAttributes() on the Node object gives a "NoSuchMethod" 
error.  What is odd though, if I use JDK1.3 it works.  With JDK1.2 it does 
not.  Does this version not work with JDK1.2 or something?
