Summary: Migrate zeroconf companion to Bonjour
           Product: Log4j
           Version: unspecified
          Platform: Other
        OS/Version: other
            Status: NEW
          Severity: normal
          Priority: P2
         Component: chainsaw
        AssignedTo: log4j-dev@logging.apache.org
        ReportedBy: carnold@apache.org

The zeroconf companion currently depends on the LGPL'd JmDNS (http://jmdns.sf.net) which prevent its
release from the ASF per the draft 3rd Party Software Policy
(http://people.apache.org/~rubys/3party.html). Apple's Bonjour implementation
(http://bonjour.macosforge.org) has had a license change to the ASL 2 in the interim.

The distribution mechanism would be a little different. Mac OS/X comes with native Bonjour
implementation and a Java implementation (I believe JNI to the native) built-in. Apple provides an
installer for Windows (http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/bonjourforwindows.html) that will
install the native implementation and JNI wrapper if Java is installed. Linuxes and BSD's will need some
investigation. The native code can be installed by make, but I don't know if the JNI is installed.

The Bonjour jars do not appear to be in Maven.

Actually, if you look closer, it's _dual_ licensed. Both ASL 2 and LGPL:

Yes, it's _very_ confusing. I actually asked them to dual license it a while
back, and I'm pretty sure one of the ActiveMQ folks also did (ActiveMQ uses it
for a Zeroconf discovery of JMS brokers).

------- Additional Comments From carnold@apache.org 2008-01-23 08:43 -------
Sorry I missed that, the public website says LGPL only, the SF web site says LGPL and ASL and the code
comments suggest ASL previously LGPL. There was a lot of recent traffic on legal-discuss on LGPL code
that triggered my response and a quick check suggested we had a problem.
