[Issue 126250] New: New Sentence Detection

https://bz.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=126250

          Issue ID: 126250
        Issue Type: DEFECT
           Summary: New Sentence Detection
           Product: Writer
           Version: 4.1.1
          Hardware: PC
                OS: Windows XP
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: major
          Priority: P5
         Component: editing
          Assignee: issues@openoffice.apache.org
          Reporter: openofficebugs@gmail.com

OO Writer automatically detects a new sentence after each period.
This can be problematic when citing research papers, because if I write:

Wong et al. discovered a new method ...

It becomes:

Wong et al. Discovered a new method ...

I noticed that MS Word detects a new sentence after a period and two spaces.
It doesn't automatically capitalize the next word, but reports it as a grammar
issue. Would it be possible to change the way Writer detects new sentences?

Build 2014-08-13 on Windows XP SP3

[Issue 126250] First letter of new sentences will always be capitalized

I am aware that this feature can be disabled.
However, monospaced fonts such as Courier require two spaces after the end of a
sentence.
Would it be possible to add an exception just for that font?

Seriously though, adding an exception for "al." is also a partial solution.
For example, if the phrase "et al." appears at the end of a sentence, then the
next word does need to be capitalized:

The protein was discovered by Wong et al. Later, ...

The only solution would be to change the way Writer detects new sentences.
It'd have to detect new sentences after a period and two spaces, instead of a
period and one.

When you disable the "Ignore double spaces" option, then you have your
solution. An exception for special fonts is not available.

I think the solution is adding "al." to the exeptions of AutoCorrect.
Until now I've never read that monospaced fonts needs other grammar than
others.

It's a partial solution, since users can still type sentences with one space
between them. An exception for this font would involve marking sentences with
one space as grammatical errors.

This is not a bug or problem but working as designed.

If you don't like it, just disable the respective option of the AutoCorrection
feature (menu "Tools - AutoCorrect Options - Tab "Options" - Option "Capitalize
first letter of every sentence").

Closing now as not an issue.
