[Vote] Phoenix 4.0.4 release
Folks,
Can we release Phoenix 4.0.4 ? I've been using it for a while and it is
sweet.
+1 from me.

it seems to be running perfectly fine. If you can put out a new RC, I'll
happily vote +1 on that!

It is used by the ConfigurationValidator I think.

I already patched the Phoenix docs as best as I could, see the Bugzilla
entry I mentioned. The rest is stuff I know nothing about, so I can't
provide any patches.

I would like to see this applied. Paul basically it is removing the setting of
system property and replacing it with something like the following on thr RMI
bean.
mbean.setJNDIName( "jrmp" );
mbean.putJNDIProperty( javax.naming.Context.INITIAL_CONTEXT_FACTORY,
m_namingFactory );

That was added to get schema validation via the other Peter into phoenix IIRC.

Yep - that needs to be fixed.

Try modifying kernel.xml to use non-noop validator and it will be used I think

Code in here:
http://cvs.apache.org/viewcvs.cgi/avalon-phoenix/src/java/org/apache/
avalon/phoenix/components/configuration/?only_with_tag=RELEASE_402-
branch
The configuration validation uses code from that package, as well as
the 'file system persistent config repo'

Phoenix :
http://cvs.apache.org/viewcvs.cgi/avalon-phoenix/lib/?only_with_tag=RELEASE_402-branch
It has been in for at least 7 months.

That worked for me.
I've partially applied it though. Reason? Docs changed from bespoke
style to forrest style on the head, but have not done so for the 402
branch. It is way too hard to apply these manually for something that is
essentially a set of spelling/case/typo changes.

I just downloaded it and it worked. You need to save as, for example,
"foo.gz" and then "gunzip foo.gz". The problem is the webserver is
misconfigured and supplies the wrong MIME type, but if you "save as..."
it works.

Ok, here are my comments:
1) The bugfix http://nagoya.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=13600 is
not in the release. Don't know if it was meant to be, it's not a major
issue for us, don't know about others.
2) http://nagoya.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=16738 is a patch
for the docs and could be applied.
3) excalibur-configuration-1.0.jar is new in the release, but the
changes file doesn't say why - but I guess there must be some change to
Phoenix, which needs this jar?
4) The changes file is generally not up to date, there is an entry,
which just consists of a "?" and other entries state "backwards
compatibility lost", but don't explain in what way. IMHO, even if the
docs are in disarray, at least the changes file should be up to date for
a release.

Don't need to upgrade it - we should not be breaking client code between micro
releases which this would do. Phoenix does not use this code anyway so it has
no effect on phoenix.

+1. In general, only upgrade dependent packages in micro version if it
fixes a bug, simply for the reason you might otherwise introduce a new one.

Paul:
Have ust taken a look at the candidate and I noticed that your using
excalibur-pool-1.1. The excalibur-pool (CVS candidate version) is 1.2
include the switch from excalibur-collections to commons-collections. I
think it would be a good idea to replace excalibur-pool-1.1 with 1.2 and
include the comons-collectons-2.1 jar file (commons colections 2.1
replaces the excalibur-collection dependency). I would also be a good
idea to validate if the excalibur-collections jar file is referenced by
any of the other resouces and if not it can be removed. If it is
referenced by something then we should look at migrating to
commons-collections.
Cheers, Steve.
p.s. documentation seems to contain several jakarta references to
Phoenix docs - perhaps this is a good time to clean that up to reference
the Avalon site.
