[I] [MEJB-6] Make the ejb-jar.xml deployment descriptor optional [maven-ejb-plugin]

jira-importer opened a new issue, #70:
URL: https://github.com/apache/maven-ejb-plugin/issues/70

**[Tim Kettler](https://issues.apache.org/jira/secure/ViewProfile.jspa?name=tik)** opened **[MEJB-6](https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/MEJB-6?redirect=false)** and commented

In the now near final EJB3 specification the use of deployment descripors is optional. It would be nice if the maven-ejb-plugin wouldn't bump out with an error if no descriptor is present.

The attached patch introduces a new boolean configuration option 'enforceDeploymentDescriptor' which defaults to true so that the default behavior is not changed. Feel free to change the name of the property if appropriate.

I'd really like to this patch applied and a new release of the EJB plugin rolled asap, so we can finally use EJB3 with Maven.

As it stands currently, I'm going in manually after building my EAR and removing the ejb-jar.xml file... That's fun the first 3 times, but I'm ready for a better solution.

I just looked at Dan's patch and it is certainly much better than the one from me.

   Hope this gets applied soon.

Thanks for the patch Dan. This was exactly what I needed to get Maven 2 to be able to build my project. Sure would be nice if someone would apply it.

This is NOT a trivial issue. The priority on this should be raised significantly, especially since a good patch has been provided. Can't you just apply the damn thing and update?

I'm an EJB3 user, and can say I'd like this also. ejb-jar.xml is now optional (and few EJB3 people are going to want one). Can't we just apply the patch? Or at least give it something more than "Trivial" in priority?

Added tests for the new configuration option and made the code formatting maven compliant.

Having a version tag is definitely the way to go.

There's a maven-ejb3-plugin in the sandbox, for quite some time now,
which created an ejb3 archive (.ejb3). Since the specs have changed
I see no reason to keep the maven-ejb3-plugin in the sandbox.

+1 to apply the patch and possibly release a SNAPSHOT. I'll test
my projects using the new plugin instead of the ejb3 plugin and see if
   all still works.

The EJB3 "final draft" was voted on and accepted by the JCP Executive Committee recently. Among the details is a confirmation that ejb-jar.xml is now optional, and ejb3 containers will now rely on metadata and automatic configurations of beans rather than requiring the deployment descriptor.

So I believe Dan's patch should be accepted and applied to the maven-ejb-plugin, and a new release (or at least an official snapshot) produced asap.

Copied from the EJB 3.0 final draft PDF document:
1.2 What is New in EJB 3.0
The Enterprise JavaBeans 3.0 architecture presented in this document extends Enterprise JavaBeans to include the following new functionality and simplifications to the earlier EJB APIs:
   • Definition of the Java language metadata annotations that can be used to annotate EJB applications. These metadata annotations are targeted at simplifying the developer's task, at reducing the number of program classes and interfaces the developer is required to implement, and at eliminating the need for the developer to provide an EJB deployment descriptor.
   • Specification of programmatic defaults, including for metadata, to reduce the need for the developer to specify common, expected behaviors and requirements on the EJB container. A "configuration by exception" approach is taken whenever possible.

I have attached a different patch, MEJB-6-maven-ejb-plugin.patch, which accepts "\<ejbVersion>3.0\</ejbVersion>" as a configuration parameter. The default is "2.1". When "3.x" is configured, ejb-jar.xml is optional. It generates site docs, and spews an INFO log entry indicating the ejbVersion value.

It turns out that EJB3 jars behave differently when there is an ejb-jar.xml file, and so you MUST have the ability to omit this file.

Sorry for probably stupid question, but how and where I apply Dan's patch ?
   Thank you.
