Does apache/modperl binary run with different versions of perl?

Hi,

in preparing a product which is designed to run under various operating
systems and thus under various versions of perl, I intend to build an
apache 1.3.27 with mod_perl 1.27 on a machine which has perl 5.6.0
installed. Is it possible to use that binary of apache/mod_perl on other
linux machines which have other versions of perl installed without
expecting any problems?

Any help is very appreciated,

Andreas

Seconded.

Really Soon Now.

I've used that approach quite often when faced with many different
systems with quite a good success. Reduces problems caused by local
versions and simplifies testing. Of course, it comes at the added cost
of having to build all that and keep it in sync.

Thanks for your answer. What do you think about building everything (perl,
emb_perl, mod_perl and apache) on a special place like /usr/local/xyz on our
development machine and installing all these binaries on various machines without
using the system perl? This is exact the opposite of your suggestion, do you think
this could work, too?

Thanks in advance,

Andreas

This won't work. At least not as is, because the hardcoded @INC will be wrong.
Otherwise it might work for version which are binary compatible.

The right approach is to prepare a source rpm or another packages system, and
then build it for each machine with different configuration.

Moreover, stay away from 5.6.0 if you want to avoid trouble. Use at least
5.6.1. Also 5.8.1 is planned to be out RSN.
