Avoiding Data Redundancy

Hi Folks,
               I use a stylesheet to generate a .dat file from an xml file 
but i have a question i process many xml's and have 4 lines of data repeting 
in each xml which i want to remove form the resulting .dat file.I used a 
substring to delete the redundant data and it worked fine.But is there any 
other way to do it other than a substring.
