   ```r
   # At the package top level
   s3_state <- new.env(parent = emptyenv())
   s3_state$initialized <- FALSE
   
   s3_init <- function(...) {
     if (s3_state$initialized) {
       return()
     }
   
     # ...
   }
   
   # ...
   s3_bucket <- function(...) {
     s3_init()

   ```
