The Ceph kernel client version is being retired in favor of the more stable and cleaner user-space client implementation. The relevant JIRA is https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HADOOP-6253.

There is a currently up-to-date patch available in the Ceph source tree, and we are currently working to create a new set of upstream patches. Information about the current state of the patch set is available on the Ceph wiki.
