[I] Geohash chart reports "Invalid geohash string" when the query returns zero rows [superset]
lilyvc opened a new issue, #44872:
URL: https://github.com/apache/superset/issues/44872
### Bug description
When a geohash-decode chart's query returns zero rows, the post-processing step reports "Invalid geohash string" — implying the data contains a malformed geohash — when the real problem is simply that there are no rows at all.
**How to reproduce the bug**
```python
from pandas import DataFrame
from superset.utils.pandas_postprocessing.geography import geohash_decode
# Any query result with 0 rows:
geohash_decode(DataFrame({"gh": []}), "gh", "lon", "lat")
# InvalidPostProcessingError: Invalid geohash string
```
`geography.py` unpacks `zip(*df[geohash].apply(decode))` into `(latitude, longitude)`; on an empty frame `zip(*...)` yields nothing, the unpack raises `ValueError: not enough values to unpack`, and the except clause re-raises it as `InvalidPostProcessingError("Invalid geohash string")`.
**Expected results**
An empty result set should return an empty frame (chart renders "no data"), and "Invalid geohash string" should only surface when a value actually fails to decode.
**Actual results**
Every empty geohash query is reported to the user as a data-format error, sending debugging effort in the wrong direction.

<!-- Answer -->
Hi @lilyvc! I'm [Dosu](https://go.dosu.dev/dosubot) and I'm helping the Apache Superset team.
The current `master` version of `geohash_decode` behaves as you describe [[1]](https://github.com/apache/superset/blob/829e4d92d91ceae4b43b1ed3b063ffe45377799c/superset/utils/pandas_postprocessing/geography.py#L40-L49). The line `lonlat_df["latitude"], lonlat_df["longitude"] = zip(*df[geohash].apply(geohash_lib.decode), strict=False)` expects `zip(*...)` to produce exactly two sequences. On an empty dataframe, `apply` returns an empty Series, `zip(*empty)` yields nothing, and the tuple unpack raises `ValueError: not enough values to unpack`. The `except ValueError` block [[2]](https://github.com/apache/superset/blob/829e4d92d91ceae4b43b1ed3b063ffe45377799c/superset/utils/pandas_postprocessing/geography.py#L48-L49) then converts this into `InvalidPostProcessingError("Invalid geohash string")` regardless of the actual cause.
`geodetic_parse` uses the same pattern [[3]](https://github.com/apache/superset/blob/829e4d92d91ceae4b43b1ed3b063ffe45377799c/superset/utils/pandas_postprocessing/geography.py#L106-L118) and would raise a similarly misleading `"Invalid geodetic string"` error on an empty frame. A fix should probably cover both functions, for example by returning an empty frame when `df` has zero rows before the `zip` unpack. That would reserve the `ValueError`/`InvalidPostProcessingError` path for genuine decode failures.
I didn't find an existing issue or merged PR for this empty-dataframe case. Recent geohash-related PRs in this repo dealt with dependency and import handling (the pygeohash migration) and deck.gl polygon rendering, not this post-processing behavior.
