Spell check
I have tried every forum. I see others have this problem but cannot fix.
My spellchecker underlines every word in red. Have tried to reinstall.
Tried to change my user ID but the terms are to technical for me and I'm
afraid to delete anything I'm not sure of. PLEASE HELP! I registered
with your forum but it said I was too new to post anything.

I'm not a programmer, but as an user I'm looking for alternatives if it
can't be solved.
So why not adding a Self Help entry in the help menu where common issues
are explained.

Exactly. We had a variant of the bug that occurred upon installation and
profile migration from version 3.x; that one was fixed. These, much more
limited from the numbers we see, other occurrences are even harder to
track and diagnose.

That has been the favorite option so far, together with an option for
resetting the profile when one (un)installs the program. You will find
the full discussions on the dev list, but technically the complexity is
that you can't delete the profile from a running OpenOffice (so this
would have to be scheduled for the next restart and coding it becomes
more complex) and that you (un)install the program system-wide, but your
profile is a per-user setting.

I understand that you can't fix the problem it it's not reproducible, but way not add an option to reset the user profile from a toolbar.

The major reason for not fixing it, is that it is _not_ a reproducable
bug. There is no sequence of steps I can take, that produces the bug.
FWIW, there is a bug in MSO-2010 that has been present since Word ran on
DOS 2.x. One would expect it to be fixed after almost twenty five
years, but it has not been fixed.

Since you're a newbie, you haven't seen the advice, which appears about
every two or three months as to how to fix this Delete your profile.
One would think that with the constant problem this causes almost
everybody who uses that software, that the developers would fix it,
but for some reason they don't.
OO and LO have some features that are hard to find in competing products,
but they obviously have some "features" that can only be considered bugs.
Personally, I only use one of these close cousins when no other word-
processor will do the particular job. Maybe someday when it becomes more
user friendly. . . .

It seems that at least once a week there arises some problem that the
solution to which is deleting the user profile (usually spell check).
Has it occurred to anyone that this might really be a defect that needs
to be addressed?

Most likely your user profile has been corrupted delete or rename your
user profile.
If you are using Windows do this by:
Close OpenOffice and the Quickstarter. Open File Explorer. Copy and paste %appdata%\OpenOffice\4 in the File Explorer Address Bar and press Enter. Rename the "user" folder. Start OpenOffice.
Details for other operating systems are given in

Which spell checkers have you installed?
What language & locale does Apache OpenOffice think that the documents
are in?
My guess is that you have not installed a spell checker for the language
that Apache OpenOffice thinks that the document is written in.
