------- Additional Comments From wrowe@apache.org 2002-10-15 19:09 -------
I got an error message that I did not have permission to use the PUT
  directive on /var/www/virthost/somesite/put.pl/dir/putfile.

The Apache HTTP server isn't distributed with a put script.

The error log showed 'Invalid URI in request PUT /dir/putfile'.

And so it was.

Neither of these error messages made it clear to me that the
issue was that PUT was expecting a URI, while I had coded a
  file system path.

The clew "Invalid URI in request" should have tipped you off.

Since we don't support any put.pl script, closing this bug as
invalid. You should consider contacting the author of the put.pl
script to encourage them to return a custom 500 response with
just a little more detail in the error response from the script.
