[I] ST_Transform returns POINT (NaN NaN) for NAD27 EPSG codes [sedona]
jiayuasu opened a new issue, #3472:
URL: https://github.com/apache/sedona/issues/3472
## Expected behavior
ST_Transform with NAD27 EPSG codes, such as EPSG:4267, EPSG:26714 or EPSG:32041, returns finite coordinates. A transform between two NAD27 coordinate systems is exact.
## Actual behavior
Every transform that involves a NAD27 EPSG code returns POINT (NaN NaN) without an error. This includes transforms between two NAD27 coordinate systems, where no datum shift is needed. Reported in discussion #3466.
Since 1.9.0, ST_Transform uses proj4sedona for vector geometries. proj4sedona 0.1.6 resolves NAD27 to a datum with optional grid files (`@conus,@alaska,@ntv2_0.gsb,@ntv1_can.dat`) and sends every such transform through WGS84. When none of the grids is loaded, the NAD27 to WGS84 step fails and the point becomes NaN. proj4sedona 0.1.7 fixes this: with no grid loaded, the datum shift is skipped.
The grid file docs are also wrong. They say that `+nadgrids=@us_noaa_conus.tif` downloads the grid from the PROJ CDN. It does not, because CDN auto-fetch is off in proj4sedona and Sedona does not turn it on. The NAD27 docs example returns NaN on 1.9.1, and after the fix it returns the input unchanged, about 96 m from the NADCON result. Only a full URL or a local path loads a grid.
## Steps to reproduce
```sql
SELECT
ST_Transform(ST_Point(2200000, 400000), 'EPSG:32041', 'EPSG:4267'),
ST_Transform(ST_Point(-98, 27), 'EPSG:4267', 'EPSG:4326')
```
Both return POINT (NaN NaN). With `spark.sedona.crs.geotools` set to `all`, both return finite coordinates.
## Sedona version
1.9.1
## Apache Spark version
4.1
## API type
Python, SQL
