[Issue 127248] New: Italics in justified paragraph - spacing error

https://bz.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=127248

          Issue ID: 127248
        Issue Type: DEFECT
Summary: Italics in justified paragraph - spacing error
           Product: Writer
           Version: 4.1.3
          Hardware: Mac
                OS: OS X 10.8
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: Normal
          Priority: P5 (lowest)
         Component: formatting
          Assignee: issues@openoffice.apache.org
          Reporter: kjell@kemedhaug.net
  Target Milestone: ---

The issue is confirmed on Mac OS-X builds 4.1.2 and 4.1.3, on several OS-X
versions (10.8 and above).

In a justified paragraph, when a word on a line is formatted with italics, the
space preceding that word is set too small (seems to be reset to default space
width for left or right aligned text). Text to the left of that word is
adjusted to compensate for this "condensed space". Spaces are widened and words
are stretched (creating too much space between letters in a word).

This happens regardless of font used. Also, indentation makes no difference.

The issue also appears when Writer substitutes the font (because it is missing
on the system), and when the style is updated with an available font from the
system (so no substitution occurs).

In other words, the issue is not font dependent. It is, however, platform
dependent. As far as I can tell, there is no such effect in Windows and Linux
builds. It only shows in Writer on Mac OS-X.

I myself received the file from someone else (who has given permission to post
it here). The initial posting of this issue has a link to where the case
spawned. I guess I should have created a document from scratch instead of
saving a few seconds. Sorry!

The issue also seems connected to other layout problems, like issue 100303
(which other users in that forum made me aware of). When the text is stretched,
the insertion point (aka text cursor) seems to assume the spacing that should
have been instead of following the character positions of stretched words.

Mac OS X 10.12.13
Open Office 4.1.3

Issue: Space immediately preceding an italicized character is much smaller than
the other spaces on the page.

Test 1
1. Start OpenOffice
2. Select "Text Document" to open Writer
3. Type multiple sentences on the page. Example sentence: "The quick brown fox
jumped over the lazy dog."
4. Set font of entire paragraph to size 13 Times New Roman
5. Set entire paragraph to "Align Justified" format
6. Select and italicize a word located in the middle of the page
7. Notice the spacing between the words preceding the italicized word change.
8. Notice the space between the italicized word and the word preceding it is
very small in comparison to the other spaces on the page.

Test 2
1. Start OpenOffice
2. Select "Text Document" to open Writer
3. Type multiple sentences on the page. Example sentence: "The quick brown fox
jumped over the lazy dog."
4. Keep font at default size 12 Times New Roman
5. Set entire paragraph to "Align Justified" format
6. Select the entire paragraph, and italicize it
7. Select one word located in the middle of the page and un-italicize it
8. Notice the changed spaces of the words surrounding the un-italicized word
9. Notice the space following the normally formatted word is very small
compared to the rest of the spaces in the paragraph
