Actually, you do definie where to put the java code in your POM. See http://maven.apache.org/reference/project-descriptor.html#sourceDirectory and http://maven.apache.org/reference/project-descriptor.html#build_unitTestSourceDirectory
.

Summary: Allow project layout other than src/java & src/test
       Type: Improvement

     Status: Closed
   Priority: Blocker
 Resolution: INCOMPLETE

 Original Estimate: Unknown

  Remaining: Unknown

    Project: maven
   Versions:

Description:
At present, maven does not work properly unless the java source files are contained under the directory src/java.

Seems wrong to have to change the project directory struture just in order to use maven.

Would it not be possible to add some information to the project xml file to tell maven where to find the source files?
