[Bug 122733] New: Opening hybrid file fails

https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=122733

            Bug ID: 122733
        Issue Type: DEFECT
           Summary: Opening hybrid file fails
           Product: Writer
           Version: AOO400-dev
          Hardware: All
                OS: All
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: P3
         Component: open-import
          Assignee: issues@openoffice.apache.org
          Reporter: cemonadresse@orange.fr
                CC: issues@openoffice.apache.org

Hi,

Opening an hybrid file fails.
Incoming of "ASCII filter options" alert after about ten seconds.

With AOO 3.4.1 (+Pdf-Import) opening is OK.

File seems to be correctly exported as an hybrid pdfdocument but can't be
opened with AOO 4.0.

On AOO 3.4.1 it doesn't work either and it seems that it is bound to the PDF
import filter. It seems to be more a feature request to make the hybrid PDF
read function independent of the import filter.

In issue 121899 Ariel enabled the hybrid export independent of the import
filter. This has changed compared to earlier versions and can be seen as the
first step of the feature.

I think it is a feature request but no showstopper for 4.0.

Nature has a way...

Maybe this is annoying enough to someone that they have an incentive to adopt
the PDF Import extension and update it and improve it. If it is truly essential
to so many people maybe it has commercial potential.

I'm optimistic enough to believe that all truly essential things get done.

Another option, perhaps worth trying, is to see if Oracle would contribute the
extension to Apache under SGA. I have no idea whether this is possible.

I'm afraid currently the only workarounds are to stay with AOO 3.4 or to switch
to the new competitor ...

Although Ariel's argumentation is comprehensible from technical point of
viewing, that all is irrelevant from user's pov. Oracle PDF Import Extension is
not "Some third parties softwar", it's one of the most important Extensions
with leading number of downloads, without it AOO will become unusable for very
many users.

searching for the embedded stream depends on the external component with
incompatible license.

Of course, the filter detection coe could be rewritten not to use external
dependencies, but IMO this is nothing that can be done for 4.0.0; and in any
case this is another bug, a RFE or task, but not a regression nor release
blocker.

--- Comment #11 from hdu@apache.org <hd...@apache.org> ---
Just searching for the embedded stream in a hybrid PDF looks like a task that
would be possible without external dependencies and with moderate complexity.
The embedded document in the hybrid PDF AOO/OOo are emitting is listed at the
end of the PDF with
  /AdditionalStreams [/application#2Fvnd#2Eoasis#2Eopendocument#2Etext N 0 R
and N being the stream number.

Confirming that opening a hybrid PDF without the PDF import extension would be
a new feature.

--- Comment #3 from Ariel Constenla-Haile <ar...@apache.org> ---
This can be NOTABUG or WONTFIX, or both.

a) all OpenOffice.org versions open a PDF file with the ASCII filter in Writer
(this is the default for every unknown file format).

b) the capability to open a PDF file containing the original OpenDocument
Format document embedded inside the PDF (known as Hybrid PDF) is a feature
added by an extension, not a core OpenOffice feature: you need to install an
extension

c) the PDF Import extension is no longer developed nor built at Apache
OpenOffice due to license conflict of the main external component. This is true
since AOO 3.4.0.

d) In 3.4.* importing hybrid PDFs worked by installing this *external*
extension:
http://extensions.openoffice.org/en/project/oracle-pdf-import-extension
This is a third party extension. Is not under the control of this project.

e) Due to the removal of the STLport library, C++ extension built with previous
AOO SDKs cannot be installed in 32 bit systems (all Windows and MacOS where AOO
is a 32 bit application, Linux 32 bit; but the extension still work in Linux 64
bit). Due to this, the Oracle PDF Import extension does no longer work in
Windows, MacOS and Linux 32 bit.

In conclusion:

* this isn't a regression:
- the feature depends on a third party extension
- the extension is no longer developed nor built at AOO since 3.4.0
- the STLport library removal is a new FEATURE, so the problem that 3.4.* C++
extensions don't work in AOO 4.0.0 is not a regression but the consequence of a
feature

* this isn't a release blocker: there is nothing this project can do in the
short time to build and distribute the PDF Import extension for 4.0.0. The main
external dependency has an incompatible license.

Related to lost PDF import filter? If yes, I think it should not be too
difficult to fix this without a PDF import filter.

I don't know how much this feature is used, but for me that's one of the
showstoppers hindering me to use AOO for my daily work in future.
