problems with svn+ssh under OS X

Hi I'm tring to get svn+ssh access working under OS X 10.3.7, but keep running into the following problem when I try to do the access:

Last login: Thu Jan 13 18:57:43 on console
> svn list svn+ssh://cfkaran2@158.12.88.100/Volumes/BlueProject/SVNrepository
cfkaran2@158.12.88.100's password:
bash: line 1: svnserve: command not found
subversion/libsvn_ra_svn/marshal.c:251: (apr_err=210002)
svn: Connection closed unexpectedly
>

Any ideas what is going on?

I can access the repository using the file:// method from my laptop, but I can't access it from either localhost or from the linux box using svn+ssh. I know that the repository isn't corrupted (I've been using it locally on my mac for a while now, now I need to access it from my linux box). I can SSH into the mac from the linux box, and 'which svnserve' shows the path to the executable. If I understand the book correctly, this is all that I need to do so access the repository remotely with this command. What am I doing wrong?

Complete setup:
OS X 10.3.7 with the latest patches applied.
SVN 1.1.2 compiled after running autogen.sh and ./configure --enable-maintainer-mode --disable-shared.
The repository is kept on an encrypted disk image that is mounted at the time I try to access it, and I use the full path in the URL to it.

Thanks,
Cem Karan

As a side note, I have experienced this when I had fortune in .bashrc of
the server.

Wehn the user logged on via ssh, fortune dumped some output, which I
think confused the svn+ssh conection.

I could be wrong in that though.

What I did here was, install svn in /opt/svn-1.1.1 (and created a
symlink of /opt/svn that points to it), then I went into /usr/bin and
did ln -s /opt/svn/bin/*

This A) Puts the svn programs in the path of all reasonable users. B)
gives you a sensible directory structure in /opt that can be upgraded
without pain (next version goes into /opt/svn-1.1.2, recreate the
symlink of /opt/svn to point to it... /usr/bin links will "just work" at
that point.), and C) gives you a reasonable back-out plan if you need it
(just change the /opt/svn symlink back to /opt/svn-1.1.1 if need be).

Hope this helps,
Best,
G.

And the way to test is is to make sure that when you use ssh (not svn)
like this:

ssh my_server svnserve
it actually finds svnserve and give something like:

base@peter:~> ssh base svnserve
You must specify one of -d, -i, -t or -X.
Type '/usr/bin/svnserve --help' for usage.

Not
bash: svnserve: command not found

This is the problem. You need to setup the account 'cfkaran2' so that the
svnserve executable is found in the path, because svn+ssh first opens an SSH
connection and then runs svnserve on the remote machine. Also make sure you
read and understood the parts of the book that deal with setting up this
access-method.
