compressing logs using rotatelogs

           Summary: compressing logs using rotatelogs
           Product: Apache httpd-2.0
           Version: 2.0.43
          Platform: All
        OS/Version: All
            Status: NEW
          Severity: Normal
          Priority: Other
         Component: All
        AssignedTo: bugs@httpd.apache.org
        ReportedBy: info@orangexl.com

By default, Apache is not able to write out compressed logs when piping them to
rotatelogs. However, since rotatelogs is much used and raw logs take up 80%
more space as compressed logs, this is a very usefull and benificial feature.
It also a often asked question.

While there are several other sollutions to solve this, these are often very
more complicated and not availeble on all systems.
