[jira] [Created] (CB-504) Install multiple versions of Cordova side-by-side

Install multiple versions of Cordova side-by-side
-------------------------------------------------

                 Key: CB-504
                 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CB-504
             Project: Apache Callback
          Issue Type: Improvement
          Components: iOS
    Affects Versions: Master
         Environment: OSX/iOS
            Reporter: Chris Brody
            Assignee: Shazron Abdullah
            Priority: Minor
             Fix For: Master

It is becoming somewhat difficult to keep up with the frequent releases of Cordova in our projects, especially when some breaking changes are possible. If it is possible for each release of Cordova to be installed with an identifier than it is easier to take a slow migration between releases.

[jira] [Commented] (CB-504) Install multiple versions of Cordova side-by-side

Jesse MacFadyen commented on CB-504:
------------------------------------

Would it make sense to modify the installer so it maintains previous versions?

ie. this would be the framework path:

Users/Shared/Cordova/Frameworks/1.6.1/...
Users/Shared/Cordova/Frameworks/1.6.0/...
Users/Shared/Cordova/Frameworks/1.5.0/...
Users/Shared/Cordova/Frameworks/Current/ *simlink to 1.6.1

Of course the cordova-x.x.x.js file included in your html would have to agree with the framework you are linking to, but this could potentially be an easier path.

I'm thinking this is more of a doc issue that I need to create. I've experimented before with a symlink solution, but this is quite error-prone. e.g. moving the current .framework into a separate Cordova-1.5.0.framework for example, and Cordova.framework always symlinked to the latest.

Inside the .framework itself (it's a bundle) there should be a VERSION file.

I agree this whole identification thing could be better.

There is some info here in FAQ item #10: https://github.com/apache/incubator-cordova-ios/blob/master/README.md

I just added https://github.com/chbrody/Cordova-PGPluginShim to compile old PhoneGap plugins on Cordova 1.5+. This is far from ideal but maybe we can use these kinds of shims to help people leave the old releases more quickly.

Chris Brody commented on CB-504:
--------------------------------

I am almost ready to release a project for a customer and I am still feeling increasingly ignorant about the whole Xcode development thing. I certainly don't like symlinks, you never know what OSX wants to do when we do a non-standard installation thing and I don't really care to experiment on my customer's project.

I think I will just go on by following FAQ item #10 to keep the project-specific framework.

This is not a real issue if Cordova becomes more stable. But if we need to keep doing adaptations, maybe using the major and maybe minor release number in the framework name could help some people go back and forth between stable and (b)leading edge versions. Or just add documentation of FAQ #10 into the installation kit itself so people will see it more quickly.

You can also say that this change is only supported starting with a version such as 1.6.0, since that was a major point in the API change. You can also say that this feature is only tested when used in certain ways and leave it up to the community to deal with edge cases.

@jesse This is what I'm suggesting, in more words. Like I said (trust me on this one) separating it out will cause more trouble than it's worth. Don't forget now I have to include a version specific uninstaller, it's more work, sure, but that's not what I'm primarily concerned about (eg add more release checklist steps)

I'm thinking of all the cases how this will cause problems, and from experience, a user will find an edge case that is not handled, guaranteed. Will have to let it stew for a bit and get more ideas - at least get a fleshed out design going.

Thanks for filing this Chris - taking suggestions here, what would you propose for "installed with an identifier"?
