DynamicImageResource loaded in serial mode

I have multiple AjaxLazyLoadPanels, which load DynamicImageResource objects.
Although the panels load in parallel, I see the requests being serialized.
These are the debug messages I am seeing:

INFO: Channel busy - postponing...
INFO: Channel busy - postponing...
INFO: Channel busy - postponing...

The result is that they end up being served serially. I filed JIRA
WICKET-2437 reporting this issue, but would like to know if there is any
workaround to load multiple images at the same time while this bug is not
fixed. The reason is that I am using Wicket this way because each image is
the output of a webservice call and, sometimes, one of more of them may take
a long time (as much as 25 seconds), making the user experience pretty bad.
