   ### What needs to happen?
   
   The bad-builtins and bad-functions directives in .pylintrc are deprecated and currently not functioning. We can either explicitly add a plugin to re-enable these checks, or we can opt to remove them from the file.

   Priority: 3 (nice-to-have improvement)
