ESQL:GET-ROW-COUNT NON ESISTE!!!

hI ALL, 
Help me: my application was returning me a strange mistake and I have found out why. I was checking that my interrogation to the database was returning me something with <esql:get-row-count/> but looking at the Esql.xsl I noticed what does not exist. 
How can I to know whether my interrogation returns me an empty set? 
I have read several Email several examples it was used in were done in. 
Does exists one alternative function?
