Would it be worth adding an Apache project for codecs? That way we could share implementation with other projects, especially hadoop common. Perhaps the Apache commons-compress module would be appropriate?

 If so, we could then depend on that common module for or purposes. Or would that be overkill? If there isn't any interest in the common-compression codec idea, I'll add take the "fork" option and add the jfastlz code to the patch.
