I think this is fixed already.  I tried with Xerces-C++ 2.1 and it can print 
out proper error message:

 > DOMCount http://domain

Fatal Error at file , line 0, char 0
  Message: An exception occurred! Type:XMLPlatformException, Message:Could not 
determine base pathname of the file

Errors occurred, no output available
