Realtionship between HttpClient and HttpConnection

What is the relationship between HttpClient and HttpConnection.  The
documentation says "An HTTP "user-agent", containing an HttpState and one or
more HttpConnections, to which HttpMethods can be applied.  When you start a
client are you automatically starting a new connection?  Do I need to
instantiate a new connection?  Any help would be much appreciated.
