Shards and (distributed) external file field

Hi,

Are there plans for bringing distributed capabilities for the external file 
field? I've not seem any hints for this in the work in distributed indexing, 
nor on the wiki or elsewhere.
Will we be able to send a very large file and have it sliced up and have the 
values sent to the designated shards, much like distributed indexing is 
supposed to work, or do we have to assign the external file field values to 
their shards externally?
