Apache SOAP

Hi,
I am a Master's student at MIT and a new user to SOAP. I am trying to setup 
a system where a client can use SOAP to embed an XQL query and send it to a 
server. Does anyone know if it is possible to use the Apache implementation 
of SOAP without running Apache Web Server? Also, anyone got any good 
references for Apache SOAP to quickly pick it up and get some sample code 
to setup a basic client and server?
Any help would be appreciated.
