missing messages in mailing list archive

Hi all,

being curious about the very beginning of the subversion project, I
just tried to download the dev and user lists archives from
news://gmane.comp.version-control.subversion.devel and
news://gmane.comp.version-control.subversion.user into my offline news
reader.

 http://subversion.tigris.org/servlets/SummarizeList?listName=dev and
http://subversion.tigris.org/servlets/SummarizeList?listName=users
report 77912 messages in the dev list and 18169 in the user list
(which are, as far as I've tested, accessible via the web interface).

looking at http://news.gmane.org/ I see that there are only 37631
messages in the dev archive and 3386 in the user archive (and I get
only about 1200 from users archive).

Next I tried to get the missing messages from the mail list archive
via mail (dev/users-get.1_100@subversion.tigris.org). That worked ok
with the users list archive, but the dev list archive seems to hold
only the last few 1000.

Is this the expected behavior of the list archives?

If so, is there an alternative way to get the missing messages from
the dev list (besides reading them online)?

TIA
     Lorenz
