[Issue 126212] New: Editing large ODT file (60+ pages) with many embedded pictures (60+ pictures) causes pictures to disappear.

https://bz.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=126212

          Issue ID: 126212
        Issue Type: DEFECT
Summary: Editing large ODT file (60+ pages) with many embedded
pictures (60+ pictures) causes pictures to disappear.
           Product: Writer
           Version: 4.1.1
          Hardware: PC
                OS: Windows 7
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: critical
          Priority: P5
         Component: editing
          Assignee: issues@openoffice.apache.org
          Reporter: jptoscano223500@gmail.com

I have created a large document (over 60 pages) with many (over 60) embedded
pictures. The file has always been kept in native ODT format, never in Word
etc. As I edited the file and scrolled back to earlier pages to review what I
had previously written I saw that pictures that had been embedded with "Insert
| Picture | From File" were no longer present, only their frames and captions.
I have gone through this file a dozen times or more, re-inserting the pictures,
and although the insertions seem to work at the points where I re-insert them,
pictures elsewhere in the document then disappear.

Doing web searches yielded suggestions to try opening Writer manually and then
opening the file with "File | Open" instead of just double-clicking on the ODT
file from File Manager. I have been doing this. Other suggestions included
going into "Tools | Options | Memory" and raising the size of the graphics
cache (I went as high as it would allow me, 256 Mb). Since many of the pictures
were originally 6 megapixel photos from my DSLR, I also reduced them with Gimp
to 1/4 their original size. I even resorted to manually performing a "File |
Save" operation after each and every picture re-insertion and while the program
gave the illusion that the insertions were working normally, other pictures
were silently disappearing in the process. The present size of the file is
about 56 megabytes. The computer is running 64-bit Windows 7 Pro and has 6 Gb
of RAM installed. The C: drive has been carefully scanned and has no errors. It
is a 760 Gb SSD with almost 300 Gb of free space left on it.

Since the file is too large to attach directly, I will give you a link to a
read-only copy of the file on the web on a DropBox account.

If I can answer any questions about this bug I would be happy to do so. I would
really like to get this document finished without having to resort to cutting
it up into multiple smaller files (and losing the TOC and TOF in the process).

An earlier version of the document was not demonstrating the loss of embedded
pictures, and can be viewed at:

Thank you in advance.

Hi John,

if you work with large documents you should not keep pictures inside the
document, better use
the "link" option:

https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/OOo3_User_Guides/Getting_Started/Inserting_an_image_from_a_file

btw: if have a macro that can extract all pictures from a file and link them.
please let me know if you want to try

No news from author since +30 days

2nd solution: you can use Pixcompress to reduce images size in your document
