Xerces regression

If you try to build log4j with the latest (from CVS) Xerces-j, you will see
a java.lang.NullPointerException
at org.apache.xerces.utils.StringPool.addSymbol(StringPool.java:348).

This problem did not occur on Tuesday morning.
