[users@httpd] Can't link to Apache 1.3 RH 7.2

Hello:

I cannot connect to a new install of Apache 1.3 under RH Linux 7.2.
I have previously set up successful Apache servers under Win32 and Debian
Progeny. Bus this one doesn't work. 've tried a bunch of stuff.

I have a cable modem connected to a LinkSys Cable Modem Router running the
LAN. I can reach my directory index page using http://localhost on the
local machine, but I cannot reach it from other machines. I get no info
log messages for Apache or for OpenSSL. I do get successful info log
messages indicating a successful startup of Apache and OpenSSL.

How can I approach debugging this?

Thanks,

Ken Loomis

I used the machine's IP. This worked on the previous versions.

Hi back,

It seems to me that you may either have a routing problem or DNS problem, or
both.
If you can access your web pages on your new Apache install via the
localhost but not from other machines, the other machines are simply not
finding your new web server.

I assume that your web router is using Network Address Translation and you
are using local IP numbers. 1st I would make sure that all of your machines
are properly connected to the local network. See if your machines can all
ping each other. I also assume that you are running your own DNS services
pointing the Internet to your Web services. Then I would try to access my
website by dialing into the Internet through an outside ISP to make sure
that your DNS to the Internet is working properly. then I would set up a
second DNS server to accommodate DNS lookups for my local network address
only visible to the local network. I would then try to connect to my web
pages on the local network Using this DNS server.

At this point you would have a pretty good idea at where the problems are.

Nathan:

I switched the routing to the Win2000 machine. You should see it working now.

[nate@willy notes]$ telnet 209.6.251.130 443
Trying 209.6.251.130...
Your router is not forwarding that port to your RH box.

What happens when you try to connect to the RH machine using it's internal
IP address? I assume it has one?

I'm pretty sure this is not an apache problem. I would be happy to help
you off the list.

Sorry I botched that. You could use ps $pid to tell exactly which process
is running. Lets assume for now that it is apache.

What happens when you try to connect from inside the network to your RH
box via a browser? what error message to you get. What URL are you using
to connect?

Are you running ipchains or, iptables? What is the output of ipchains -nL
, or iptables -nL

On the RH machine, can you cut and paste the output of netstat -atn|grep
443

if you get something back like 192.168.97.1:443 try fuser -n tcp 443 and
paste the output aswell.

This way we should be able to tell if something is indeed listening on
port 443 and if it is an apache process. Then we can look at apache
configuration problems, or firewall issues maybe?

Anyway, forgive me if this seems obtuse, I'm new also :-)

Nathan:

I'm not so familiar with telnet to know if I'm doing it correctly. On a
windows machine I did Run: telnet. I clicked "Connect." In host: I put
192.169.1.103. In port I replaced "telnet" with 443. I was unable to make
a connection. When I reopened telnet "telnet" was back in the host, so I
don't know if it "took" 443.

I can ping 192.168.1.103

Thanks for helping,

Ken

Sorry, I misunderstood your problem.

Can you telnet to the RH machine from any other machines on your network
and connect to the port you have apache listening on?

Nathan

Not a silly question, at all. Been there - done that. But not this time. I
confirmed the internal IP address with ifconfig.

Sounds like you're suggesting I try that?

Silly question on my part, but are you sure your linksys is forwarding to
the correct port on your RH machine?

What error do you get when you try to connect from 'the outside'.

Nathan
