Must restart tomcat after putting a jar into common/endorsed?
Hi,
I am using Tomcat 5.0.30 with JDK 1.4.2_05. I notice that if I copy
a jar file into CATALINA_HOME/common/endorsed, I have to restart
Tomcat for it to take effect. Why?
Thanks in advance!

Because classes are loaded once, and only once in a running
classloader. Keep in mind that it is possible to restart apps under the
appserver because the WebappClassLoader can be discarded and started
again. Do that for the server's classloader hierarchy and now you've,
essentially, restarted the server. Any library you put in endorsed/lib,
common/lib, shared/lib, and the like will only be recognized upon server
restart. Keep in mind this is true of any other appserver's global
libraries. It is only when the classloader can be discarded that libraries
can get reloaded while the rest of the server keeps running.
