By the way, the list is available at

I finished adding in India, Canada and the USA and will merge in the list
at the java faq at some point.
Then I'll start value adding. Highlighting yahoogroups which are dead,
putting countries/citys back in etc.
Now that all the chaff is removed, it's quite fun to surf the JUGs :)

Yeah, I was referring to the JUGs that were dead. The yahoo ones seem to
maintain some minor survival, but the others appear to vanish.

JUGs, Was: Jakarta Site - Japan

Even down to the red and green usage of colouring.
Its biggest problem though is lack of maintainance, which could be to make
it look better. Of the nearly 1000 JUGs said to be there, a large number
are people ticking the 'JUG' option when adding and not the 'Looking for a
JUG' option. There's also no 3 years later removal of requests for a JUG.
The only JUGs which seem to linger and yet not be a mild success are the
ones that use yahoogroups, and many of these get a mail or two a month.
By the way, the case study for how to form a jug, which appears to be
about a JUG called: 'Research Triangle Park JUG', points to
'www.jughead.org', which is some kind of comic. An example of the
staleness of Sun's site :)

Well I don't think we can complain about placement since we're featured
as the case study on how to start a JUG ;-) But the sun directory
itself is very ill-designed. Its not like anyone looking to join a jug
could actually find one in there. Its really a great case study on what
NOT to do in user interface design.

I've yet to do Canada, the US or India [due to size of reported JUGs]. If
trijug don't come out of the Sun site, I'll make sure to add it.

The reason I found it is because I'm compiling a list of all the JUGs with
websites. [The Sun page is useless. So I'm taking the time to filter it
out so I have something useful].
If Jakarta decide to get organised about translations, an idea might be to
target JUGs as the groups to do the translation. They are often looking
for a community project.
There seem to be a lot of french-speaking developers in Africa trying to
organise things without much luck, and there's a lot of nice looking
spanish pages from Latin America.

1. "Ja-Jakarta" http://www.ingrid.org/jajakarta/
2. "Jakarta no mori" http://www.terra-intl.com/jakarta/
The latter is what I am doing.
I added the target subprojects, "Avalon" and "Turbine" and "Watchdog"
(I want to finish them in the end of 2002), so this means
that the two Japanese translation projects mentioned above will cover
all of the jakarta-projects. Hope this encourages the developers
and the translators in other countries/languages.
