Help with Manager Embedded Web Application

I've successfully installed TomCat on my IBM mainframe system that runs
z/OS 1.7. When I start my web server and use a URL with :8080 specified
for the port, Tomcat catches it just fine. From this default web page, I
click on Manager. After providing my user ID and password, I then see a
screen with many applications, which I can click on to see what happens,
things like jsp-examples, tomcat-docs, etc. One of them is manager, which
displays a screen telling me that this application was not found. I went
back to the apache website and found an embedded applications download. I
downloaded this and have found that it contains the manager web
applications. Unfortunately, I find that the CATALINA_HOME in this zip
file is not what was in my initial download of tomcat itself. Tomcat
itself has a home directory of apache-tomcat-5.5.17, but the imbedded
applications that has the manager application has a CATALINA_HOME of
apache-tomcat-5.5.17-embedded. How do I install this? It needs to go
into my CATALINA_HOME, but tar (that is, jar) will simply create a
directory of apache-tomcat-5.5.17-embedded, which tomcat will not be
looking at. Did anyone else run into this?

probably not much help to you now, being nearly half a year later.

i had the same problem just now. manager section would not show anything.

found your post and started looking closer and closer to what i was doing.

you have to and the word manager to the tomcat-users.xml file.

the manager section only works if this has been set.

this file is located in the conf folder.

<tomcat-users>
	<user name="tomcat"
		password="tomcat"
		roles="tomcat, manager" />
	<user name="role1" password="tomcat"
		roles="role1" />
	<user name="both" password="tomcat"

</tomcat-users>

hope this helps someone else.

It means the manager webapp has no default welcome page. The best entry
point is http://sy8d:8080/manager/html unless you are using the manager
webapp with a script which doesn't need the pretty response.

The link works for me and others, and should not be cookie-dependent:
http://jcp.org/aboutJava/communityprocess/final/jsr154/index.html

> If its a link to the J2EE specification, I have that.

There are many J2EE specs; the one I gave above is JSR 154, the Servlet
spec. Which one are you talking about? If it's JSR 151, the J2EE
Platform spec, it refers to the Servlet and JSP specs in several places,
but does not include their text. Note that Tomcat is a web container,
not an EJB container, so much of what's in JSR 151 does not apply.

As I said before:
There is no welcome page or other "master" manager app screen.

A 404 error does not mean app not found - it means the requested URI
does not map to any known servlet, web page, or other resource. If you
want http://sy8d:8080/manager to display something, put a welcome file
in the directory, so Tomcat will have it to fall back on when the
mapping operation fails.

You should probably read, not skim, the Servlet spec to better
understand how this stuff fits together:
http://jcp.org/aboutJava/communityprocess/final/jsr154/index.html

RE: Help with Manager Embedded Web Application

Yes, I see that now. I read it too quickly. Yes, I do have the directory
you mentione, but here is where my lack of expertise with the J2EE is
getting in my way. In the web.xml file, is have for the servlet mapping
directives:
  <servlet-mapping>^M
    <servlet-name>Manager</servlet-name>^M
      <url-pattern>/list</url-pattern>^M
  </servlet-mapping>^M
  <servlet-mapping>^M
    <servlet-name>Manager</servlet-name>^M
      <url-pattern>/sessions</url-pattern>^M
  </servlet-mapping>^M
  <servlet-mapping>^M
    <servlet-name>Manager</servlet-name>^M
      <url-pattern>/start</url-pattern>^M
  </servlet-mapping>^M
  <servlet-mapping>^M
    <servlet-name>Manager</servlet-name>^M
      <url-pattern>/stop</url-pattern>^M
  </servlet-mapping>^M
  <servlet-mapping>^M
    <servlet-name>Manager</servlet-name>^M
      <url-pattern>/install</url-pattern>^M
  </servlet-mapping>^M
  <servlet-mapping>^M
    <servlet-name>Manager</servlet-name>^M
      <url-pattern>/remove</url-pattern>^M
  </servlet-mapping>^M
  <servlet-mapping>^M
    <servlet-name>Manager</servlet-name>^M
      <url-pattern>/deploy</url-pattern>^M
  </servlet-mapping>^M
  <servlet-mapping>^M
    <servlet-name>Manager</servlet-name>^M
      <url-pattern>/undeploy</url-pattern>^M
  </servlet-mapping>^M
  <servlet-mapping>^M
    <servlet-name>Manager</servlet-name>^M
      <url-pattern>/reload</url-pattern>^M
  </servlet-mapping>^M
  <servlet-mapping>^M
    <servlet-name>Manager</servlet-name>^M
      <url-pattern>/save</url-pattern>^M
  </servlet-mapping>^M
  <servlet-mapping>^M
    <servlet-name>Manager</servlet-name>^M
      <url-pattern>/serverinfo</url-pattern>^M
  </servlet-mapping>^M
  <servlet-mapping>^M
    <servlet-name>Manager</servlet-name>^M
      <url-pattern>/roles</url-pattern>^M
  </servlet-mapping>^M
  <servlet-mapping>^M
    <servlet-name>Manager</servlet-name>^M
      <url-pattern>/resources</url-pattern>^M
  </servlet-mapping>^M
  <servlet-mapping>^M
    <servlet-name>Status</servlet-name>^M
    <url-pattern>/status/*</url-pattern>^M
  </servlet-mapping>^M
  <servlet-mapping>^M
    <servlet-name>JMXProxy</servlet-name>^M
      <url-pattern>/jmxproxy/*</url-pattern>^M
  </servlet-mapping>^M
  <servlet-mapping>^M
    <servlet-name>HTMLManager</servlet-name>^M
    <url-pattern>/html/*</url-pattern>^M
  </servlet-mapping>^M

So it understands the url's of http://sy8d:8080/manager/list (for the
first servlet mapping directive) and http://sy8d:8080/manager/sessions
(for the second servlet mapping directive) and ....

But in the web document I see when I just use http://sy8d:8080 (which
brings up the Apache Tomcat 5.5.17 home page) and then click on "Tomcat
Manager" (which brings me to the "Tomcat Web Application Manager" web
page) and then click on "/manager", it uses a URL of
http://sy8d:8080/manager which then displays a "HTTP Status 404 -
/manager/" screen, which I thought meant that it couldn't find the manager
application. What does this really mean?

And again, thanks for helping me with this. I am a real Tomcat neophyte.

You really, really shouldn't have done that. The embedded version of
Tomcat is only for use within another product (e.g., JBoss).

The manager app that comes with the stand-alone Tomcat download is
actually a composite of several more or less independent servlets (e.g.,
manager/html is the one normally used). There is no welcome page or
other "master" manager app screen. If you look in
server/webapps/manager/WEB-INF/web.xml, you'll see numerous
<servlet-mapping> tags that specify the valid URIs for the manager app.

But I don't have a [CATALINA_HOME]/webapps/manager. I have otheres, I
have ROOT, and balancer, and jsp-examples, and servlet_examples, and
tomcat-docs, and webdav, but no manager. That's what sent me looking for
other applications. For example, I just downloaded an Administration
application because the APACHE doc said that it was no longer shipped with
the base product. I thought manager was another. I have played with
JBoss but decided to go with the tomcat base deployment instead.
