   Ideally we need mutable reader / writer format support for var width noDict MV columns as a proper solution. So (1) is the way to go imo. 
   
   The other thing was to track this info (and use later during conversion to instantiate offline var width mv writer) during consumption itself as long as it can be done in a clean manner. But you had some concerns with this @vvivekiyer  ?
