using confluence for main site documentation

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1

I've started looking in to how to use confluence to manage the main site
(incubator.apache.org/vcl). Does this sound like a good idea to others? I
think using a wiki makes more sense than trying to manage pages in some kind
of editor using svn checkouts of the content. More info about maintaining
our main site can be found here:

http://incubator.apache.org/guides/sites.html

To use confluence, it seems there is an autoexport plugin that has to get
enabled to get the content mirrored to /www/confluence-exports on
people.apache.org. Also, it looks like we may need another
confluence "space" that's just for maintaining main site documentation that's
only available to VCL people who have signed a CLA. Am I correct about this?
If so, who can go about setting that up for us?

Thanks,
Josh

Ah, I was confused. I see four cases (at least) for permissions:

- write docs
- read docs
- read code
- write code

I think all reads should be open, but writes require a cla. Sorry for the
confusion. I should have asked questions before jumping in with an opinion.

I haven't seen anything explaining it further than that. I guess the main
site (incubator.apache.org/vcl) is considered to be tied to the project so
tightly that a CLA is required to contribute to it.

I like that idea. Is there a reason to have a separate space for cla'ed

Some Apache projects do use Confluence for their project websites. I
think it works well. I have to confess that I've never been closely
involved with the initial setup. So, I'm not able to offer much more
in the way of advice.

IIUC, it's a requirement to have a CLA on file to edit the podling's
main website. IMO, you should require a CLA for *all* documentation
contributions. If you ever want to include the documentation in a
*release* of VCL, then you need the rights to apply the apache license
to the documentation. Taking the steps now, makes it much easier down
the line...

Alan,

Can you go ahead and set up another space for us named VCLDOC? Then, we can
limit access to contributing to that space to people who have a CLA on file
and configure the autoexported contents to be copied to

http://incubator.apache.org/vcl/

to use as our official documentation.

Thanks,
Josh

It is my understanding that anyone can contribute to the wiki space we
currently have, but that whatever wiki space we set up to autoexport as
our "official project documentation" can only have contributors that have
signed a CLA.

This site:

http://incubator.apache.org/guides/sites.html

seems to be the guide for creating content at

http://incubator.apache.org/vcl/

Under the section titled "Using A Wiki To Create Documentation" there is
a "guidelines" link that goes to this FAQ:

http://cwiki.apache.org/CWIKI/

At the top of that pages, there is a bullet that says:

"Some Spaces are being used to create the Project documentation. Editing
access to such Spaces might be restricted to Project committers or
individuals who have filed a Contributor's License Agreement with the ASF."

This tells me there are some spaces for project documentation, and other that
are *not* for project documentation, and thus don't require a CLA to
contribute to them.

What we'd like is to have 2 areas: one where anyone can contribute content,
and another area where we can maintain the official project documentation and
have it autoexported to

http://incubator.apache.org/vcl/

Does this make sense?

Thanks,
Josh

Yes, that second Confluence instance. I'm not sure that it's needed
since all documentation needs a CLA.

I can set this up for you. I'm not sure why we would want two
different wikis.
