Problem with latin characters

We have some issues with a org.w3c.dom.Element returned by a SOAP Service.
Some specific caracters like 'é' (ASCII code &#x00E9) are changed during the
transport.
Has someone already experienced such an issue?
Is it possible to change the encoding style to "ISO-8859-1"?
