I have downloaded branch-1.1 for building spark from scratch on my MAC. The path had a space like
/Users/rkgurram/VirtualBox VMs/SPARK/spark-branch-1.1,

1) I cd to the above directory 

2) Ran ./sbt/sbt assembly 

The command fails with weird messages
