Binary file format docs now available
Hi All
In case you hadn't seen, Microsoft released their documentation for the
binary file formats over the weekend. It's all under their OSP (Open
Specificiation Promise), which allows us to use it to implement open
source software.
The documentation can be downloaded from
http://www.microsoft.com/interop/docs/OfficeBinaryFormats.mspx
The excel guide weighs in at 350 odd pages, powerpoint is 120, and word is
210 pages. Nice bit of light reading for us all!

It's more of the same of the Word 97 spec. So if that was enough for
someone, then these will be also. The only notable changes I can think
if in the recently released spec are some interesting features that
weren't out with Word 97, nested tables, List styles, and table
styles.
Yes, these are the ones I got when I went to SoftArtisans and also
when I was working at Microsoft. Nothing has been changed or removed.

If these are pretty much the ones you got when you went to SoftArtisans,
has the NDA you were under largely vanished now that Microsoft themselves
have made it public?
Also, do you think these docs are enough for someone new to get really
into HWPF, or is a fair bit of reverse engineering still needed in your
opinion?

I've had access to these for some time. In regards to the Word format
documentation, there isn't a lot that has been added. Basically,
they've added new SPRMs and some of the old data structures have some
changes.
There seem to be a lot of new features that are hinted at in the FIB
but not documented. Also, Embedded objects and images haven't been
documented any better.
Looking at the Excel and Powerpoint docs, it's pretty much a listing
of records with tiny bits of info on how everything fits together.
