Using XSP in Forrest
Hi,
I downloaded the apache-forrest-0.4-bin version and am considering to use it
in one of my projects. In this project I do have a bunch of XSP's which I
would like to use in my new forrest project site.
1. Can anyone tell me what I should to do to get an XSP up and running in my
forrest site. The online docs talk about different sitemaps that are
used.....in my prebuild version I only see. Am I using the right version of
forrest?
2. The dynamic website runs perfectly within the Jetty engine but the
WAR-file generated by forrest doesn't run under Tomcat. What am I doing
wrong?
Thanks,
Danny Bols

Thanks for the advice.
Took me some time to find out how to checkout and how to build a new version
of cocoon
and forrest. The hardest part though was the integration of the new cocoon
version in forrest.
The script for the integration of cocoon into forrest was only avialable in
UNIX-version...so
i tried to find out what it actually did.....and did the integration
manually on my XP.
Are there any plans for integrating the new cocoon version into Forrest?

Jeff,
I have a similar problem, and used JDK 1.3.07 with the same result.

0.4 is 5-6 months old. Adding XSP capabilities involves recompiling
Cocoon, so to do it properly, you'd have to use a 5-6 month old version
of Cocoon. If it were me, I'd use CVS Forrest (pretty stable) and CVS
Cocoon, which is very close to a 2.1 final release.

Did you set the java.endorsed.dirs property? When you ran 'forrest
webapp', it would have printed a message like this:
If using JDK 1.4 or above, make sure to set the Java environment variable
-Djava.endorsed.dirs=/home/jeff/apache/xml/xml-forrest/build/dist/shbat/bin/../lib/endorsed
Eg, in the TOMCAT_OPTS (3.3.x) or CATALINA_OPTS (4.x) env variable.

I was surprised to see that Forrest, a tool based on the Cocoon framework,
wasn't XSP-enabled. I would definitively make it XSP-enabled.....it took me
a lot of valueable time to integrate the latest version of Cocoon into
Forrest and to configure it so I was able to run my XSP's (if I want to use
a newer version of Forrest i have to do the job again). So this is a big
VOTE for making Forrest XSP enabled.
---------
One other question:
In my case the document-v12.dtd is too limited and needs to be extended. For
instance there are no tags available for handling forms and the table tags
are too basic. What is the proper way to do this? I want a solution so I can
stay close to what is happening in the Forrest project. Should we discuss a
document-v13? I like the idea of having a powerfull intermediate format.

If users want it to. Perhaps we could ship Forrest with XSP enabled in
cocoon.xconf, and then have a 'get-xsp' Ant target which fetches the
compiler and extra classes.

There was a discussion about this a while ago, I can't remember the
outcome.
Think better documentation will certainly be supplied to facilitate
custom blocks in Forrest.

Is this an attempt to run an XSP? The default Forrest sitemap doesn't
generate URLs like this. Can you paste the pipeline you've got trying to
run the XSP?
When requesting a page from the live webapp ('forrest run' ; see
http://localhost:8888), are there any errors in
build/webapp/WEB-INF/logs/errors.log?

The DTD and .mod files are part of Forrest. Why would you be copying
them anywhere?

RE: dynamic website
Posted by Johan Kok <jk...@messianic.dyndns.org>.
Danny,
Tried the endorsed variable with that with jdk 1.4 , unfortunately no
progress. jdk 1.3 provides the same result. ---
1. Rendered a blank page (i.e. no errors, no frames, nothing) when using
localhost:8080/test (test web-site)
2. Any document using document v11 does not render, not only does the
document not render, but the whole browser render a clear screen.
3. Calling the FAQ page (localhost:8080/test /FAQ), directly does however
bring the site up with that page. The same account for the other document
types - all of them render correctly, including header, tabs/menu tabs, page
etc.
In my check it seems that the use of document-v11 is the culprit causing a
blank display. FAQ, todo and change work from a newly seeded site. I copied
a document-v11 (dtd & mod) from a working site, without any change in
result. At this stage I will have to go wider in my search --- anybody with
a quick solution...
