40 million download mark for Apache OpenOffice 3.4.
Yesterday we reached the 40 million download mark for Apache
OpenOffice 3.4. Congratulations to all the volunteers who made this
possible!
More information can be found in this blog post on this topic:

As always, any help you can provide to share the story to your social
networks would be appreciated.

We Vital will begin promoting downloads of Open Office 3 and 4 on our portal on a daily basis, next month because of its compatibility with our products and services which are all open source based.
As to your comments in this thread, I believe this decline has more to do with corporate and government buying and budget policy than industry shift. Tablet and smart devices are creating an expanded market with some cannibalization. End users will and do have a portfolio of devices at their disposal, particularly in the US and other western nations where adoption is relatively mature.
It is my guess that in BRICS and other new markets the reverse adoption process will occur; the end user adoption is driven by personal use and the purchase of smart devices and tablets due to price/ mobility /Internet infrastructure then as these markets mature and the service sector/small business/worker class expands, desktops and networks will grow rapidly. Thus if my guess is right we need a two prong strategy to push downloads accordingly. A tablet , smart device compatible OO-4 plus a continued desktop adoption presence.

I saw a similar report in the Wall Street Journal. This follows on a 10%
decline of PC sales the quarter before.
What does that mean for us?
First, there is a lot of synergy between PC, OS and Desktop Applications.
This is true in previous upgrade cycles at least. So a new version of MS
Windows propels PC sales, and sales of Microsoft Office. Companies upgrade
their PCs every 3-7 years, and consumer/home sales pickup the latest new PC
that already has the latest Windows and Office.
So if these sales are declining, what does that mean? The articles
interpret it as movement toward tablets and smartphones. That is certainly
one part of it.
But what happens to the old PC's? Is anyone sending their PC to the dump
and moving 100% over to the tablets? Maybe some are. But I think for most
people the desktop still exists, but they see no reason to upgrade at this
point. I don't think AOO is dependent on the PC upgrade cycle. We're more
dependent on the total number of PCs in use. So if that total number is
constant or increasing, then our user base will continue to grow.
Maybe we should ask questions related to this in our user survey. For
example:
1) For the machine on which you run OpenOffice, did you receive it as a new
PC or a used one?
2) Was OpenOffice already installed on the machine when you received it, or
did you install it later?

Just now I read a report where PC sales has come down by 13% in the first
quarter of 2013. In spite of that, our down load is 40M. Impressive
performance.

Think about it.
If the users of open office were given a tax credit for contributions to
open source software and 10% of them gave $10, AOO could have raised
