Microsoft Word 2010 document margin and table issue when rendered in OpenOffice 3.2/3.3

Dear All,

I have a user generated document from Microsoft Word 2010 , it displays
good in Microsoft Word 2010 and also can be saved as PDF in Microsoft
Word 2010.

When a user opens it in OpenOffice 3.3 the get a different layout and
there is issues with how the tables and table cells are displayed, the
same appear

in the PDF when the user saves it as PDF from OpenOffice

I am at wits end and don't know what to explain to the user? Also the
pdf is used for printing and signature and it looks bad in it.

Can someone explain?

Why is the OpenOffice code or usecase for rendering Microsoft word
documents not taking care of such cases?

Please someone advice what I should explain?

Thanks and Regards,

Abraham Mathew.

That is not correct:
.DOC format was opened before/during the OOXML debacle as no further
development was to take place on it. Most was known through reverse
engineering anyway.
.DOCX format as part of OOXML had a extremely large spec released for
it (see Ecma 376). However there are three versions of OOXML. The 1st
Edition that Microsoft and Ecma (initially as Microsoft sock puppets)
offered to ISO/IEC for standardisation and is deprecated. The 2nd
Edition which AFAIK has not been implemented by any Office software
is the standard ISO/IEC 29500. The 3rd Edition is also not
implemented.

Both Microsoft Office 2007 and 2010 use the 1st Edition. Information
on this format is well available, however embedded objects especially
of the Microsoft variety may well be in closed formats.

Rob Weir may correct any inaccuracies here as this description
encapsulates many man years of hard work for many people into the
briefest possible space i could conscientiously achieve.

Thanks.  I'm not surprised by the changes.  Compatibility with MSFT formats is attained by reverse engineering, I understand, because MSFT will not release the information required to achieve compatibility.

I see that you have filed a bug report.  For anyone interested: https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=119013

Cheers.

It's understandable that OpenOffice does not load the MSFT document perfectly for the reasons others have mentioned.  Use your Word document to create the pdf.  If you want a better version for OpenOffice, create a document in the open document format (odt for text documents).

Just explain that Microsoft don't comply to the
Open Document Standard, it's as simple as that.

The quick answer is the the filters to convert from MS formats to
OpenOffice formats have been reverse engineered, and are not
perfect, as you have found. They work for less complex cases,
but fail as formating becomes more complicated. Formatting
variations between platforms are also caused by differences in
installed fonts, which are rarely identical (or all available)
between platforms.

If formatting invariance is required, it is essential to use one
application only, rather than try to maintain invariance across
operating system platforms and differing applications. Indeed,
when final layout is involved, it needs to be restricted to the
same machine and application, as there can be minute variations
even within applications and similar operating systems.
