multiple tomcats on the same host

Hi,

We have a linux server, and for educational purposes we want to let users on
this server to install their own tomcat engine under their own directories.

We asked users to change port number to avoid any confliction. This strategy
works for tomcat version 3.2.3, but when using 4.0.1, only one tomcat can
run at any time.

Could you give us some hints on how to achieve this multiple tomcat engine
solution?
