problem with windows server 2003, apache 2.2.4 and subversion 1.4.5

hi,

I'm using apache 2.2.4 with subversion binaries 1.4.5 built against apache 2.2.
I have to use it on a windows server 2003.
Normal svn checkouts etc are working without a problem, but I can't do
administrative task. I can't hotcopy or create a repository.

Code:
svnadmin: Kann Status von Verzeichnis »test\db« nicht ermitteln: Partial results
are valid but processing is incomplete

Thats the german error message. In english it would be something like

Code:
can't stat directory

I already googled and found out that this is a known issue for 1.4.4. Is there
the same problem with 1.4.5? Has anyone been able to resolve this?

You won't be able to use the binaries built against apache 2.2 to
create a repository on Windows 2003 as there is an APR bug.

It's possible that this bug only affects the svnadmin tool however -
so you might use the apache 2.0 binaries to create the repository and
then the 2.2 binaries for access - I don't know the scope of the
problem to advise you here - it could affect the other tools too
(svnlook, svndumpfilter, svnsync, ...)

Of course you'll probably need to keep the 2.0 binaries available for
svnadmin tasks.

Sorry. I might have expressed the problems a bit inexact.
I tried a few combinations in the hope to get everything working.

If I am using the binaries built against apache 2.2.*:
Then I've no problem with apache. Checking out, commiting, accessing repository
via browser all is working.

But then I can't create a repository. The svnadmin command then isn't really
working. As it was already said this is a known issue.

If I am using the binaries built against apache 2.0.*:
Then of course apache crashes on accessing a repository, etc. But administrative
tasks like creating a repository are working.

If I am using the binaries built against apache 2.0.*, but giving apache the
modules (mod_dav_svn.so, ...) from the binaries against 2.2.*:
Then I get the MKactivity error. But creating a repository is working.

Hope this is clear now.

Johannes:

When you say "not experiencing any problems with apache", you do mean
that you can access your svn repositories via http, right? Because in
your second paragraph it sounds like you *are* having problems!

Is the issue with:

a) the svnadmin client
b) the svn client

please circle one ;)

Are you able to access repositories through a web browser?

hi Brian

yes, you're right. I'm not experiencing any problems with apache, but with
svnadmin command line task like svnadmin create.

I just tried to use the binaries built against apache 2.0.*.
The problem is that apache crashes, if I give him the .so modules.
If I give apache modules for 2.2.* and only copy the binaries built against
2.0.* over the ones build for 2.2.*, I get a MKactivity error on checking out.

Wait a minute, I just re-read your issue. You aren't having any
problems with Apache. You are having problems doing commandline
svnadmin tasks, right?

Well, I can't speak for WIndows, but I had a similar case on Solaris
-trying to use the APR that comes with SVN (0.97) with Apache 2.2 -it
kept crashing the server.

The case might be different in Windows, but I wouldn't think so.

But they won't work with apache 2.2.4, do they?

Or can I just copy them above the other binaries and it'll work.
I don't think so.

It's a known bug in the APR version in binaries built against apache 2.2.x.

Get the Subversion binaries built against apache 2.0.x instead of 2.2.x

This was mentioned to me as having been fixed on trunk so I expect
it'll be fixed in Subversion 1.5
