(was: I have created a directory named 'maven' , changed directory to maven ( cd maven ), downloaded POM files by executing-- wget http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xsi:schemaLocation="http://maven.apache.org/POM/4.0.0 http://maven.apache.org/xsd/maven-4.0.0.xsd .   i can see that file  maven-4.0.0.xsd exists inside the directory. 
After giving the mvn clean package command i am getting the error 
" The goal you specified requires a project to execute but there is no POM in this directory (/home/ubuntu/maven). Please verify you invoked Maven from the correct directory. ". How to rectify it ??
