How to append to a Unicode file?

As a newbie to log4j, I see from the docs that all the file appenders 
seem to write to encoded ASCII file,
yet I have need to store Unicode messages (there will be a simultaneous 
mix of languiges in my logs).

Is there any relatively simple way to achieve this?  Also, does 
LogFactor5 support reading from Unicode
log files?
