Dave Smith's v1 Jaxen patches

I tried the patches that were posted on the 27th by Dave Smith (which 
were based on the v2 patches by Cezar Andrei) that introduced Jaxen 
support for v1.  The patches are here:

Are XPath predicates supposed to work with this patch?  I can't get any 
expressions that contain predicates to return any results.
