[Issue 126678] New: Autocorrect stopped replacing

https://bz.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=126678

          Issue ID: 126678
        Issue Type: DEFECT
           Summary: Autocorrect stopped replacing
           Product: Writer
           Version: 4.1.1
          Hardware: PC
                OS: Windows 7
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: Minor
          Priority: P5 (lowest)
         Component: editing
          Assignee: issues@openoffice.apache.org
          Reporter: foxswinters@gmail.com

While writing today, I noticed that the autoreplace feature has stopped
working. The desired changes are still listed in the Autocorrect Options menu,
but they no longer apply automatically. The error persists in both 4.1.2 and
4.1.1 versions of OpenOffice. There was an unexpected crash earlier today which
might have something to do with it, but all attempts at repairing OpenOffice
have had no effect. WHile I don't consider this to be a "major" problem, it is
still very time consuming and frustrating, as many of the replacements I
require contain Special Characters, which means wasting a lot of time inserting
the characters instead of it being taken care of automatically.

This error has never occurred before, and it's only within the last hour that
it has manifested. The 'Apply While Typing' option is still selected. Repairing
has failed. Uninstalling and re-installing has failed. Reverting to 4.1.1 has
also failed. I'm out of ideas for possible methods of fixing this issue.

--- Comment #1 from Metalmad <dm...@gmail.com> ---
I was unable to reproduce this bug on following platforms:

Intel Core i5-3230M/8Gb/128GbSSD/GeForce740m - Windows 7 64bit
Mac Mini Late 2014 Intel Core i5-1.4Ghz/4Gb/500Gb HDD/Intel HD5000 - Mac OS X
10.11.4

In my tests I used AOO Writer version 4.1.2 and 4.1.1 on both platforms.

I tried following tests to reproduce the issue:

Test 1

1. Opened a new document with AOO Writer
2. Typed in some text into the document.
3. Tried to type in several special characters from the AutoCorrect Options
Replacement list.
 Such as: “--”, “(C)”, ‘(R)” and others.
4. Tried to use several words from the AutoCorrect Options Replacement lis such
as: “ctaegory”, “byt he”, “diffrent” and others.

Test 2

1. Opened a new document with AOO Writer
2. Pasted some text into it
3. Saved the file in 3 different formats: .odt, .doc and .rtf
4. Reopened saved files and repeated Test 1 in all of them.

Test 3.

1. Switched off Format > AutoCorrect > While Typing option.
2. Restarted the AOO Writer
3. Switched on Format > AutoCorrect > While Typing option.
4. Opened each of 3 files in different format I created in the Test 2 step 3.
5. Repeated Test 1 using those conditions.

As a System Administrator I suspect that initial reporter could have struggled
with Hard Disk drive problems. Filed attempts to repair or reinstall the AOO
could point on a bad sector on their hard drive, so, installed AOO files could
be damaged which caused the behavior mentioned in their report.

Phase 2:
The first description stated that the desired changes were in the AutoCorrect
menu but stopped working. I repeated the next test with using some of the words
in the AutoCorrect replacement just to see if it will auto correct.
1. I used the same steps in the first test, but this time open a new document.
2. I used words like abotu=about, abscence=absence, agreemeent=agreement,
allready=already and ahppen=happen. Since these words were in the replacement
file, the words automatically corrected themselves.

5. I selected Format at the top of the menu, Auto Correct (there was a
checkmark for While Typing) and selected AutoCorrect Options.
6. The replacement and exceptions for language selected is English (USA) and
the tab should default to Replacement. As you can see in screenshot # 2, the
word that has the typo is not listed in the replacement file and in order for
this word to autocorrect; it will need to be saved in the replacement file.

Follow-up tests:

I although I was not able replicate the error; I believe the original report
stated replacing special Spanish characters. After further research I was able
to come up with a solution.

1. Google Search Engine
2. Typed Open Office Special Language Characters
3. Select How to Handle Special Characters in OppenOffice.org
(www.openoffice.org/.../HOW.../Howto_special_char.pd)
4. On page two of (Inserting Special Characters from the menu) gives you the
steps.
5. Go to start-programs Open Office.
6. on the blank document, type in a word (e.g., Senor)
7. At the top of the menu, select Insert-Special Characters, the select font
and the right bar, select the “lower case n” select ok. You will see the n
appears to be a special character.
8. At the top menu, select Format-AutoCorrect-AutoCorrect Options; replace the
original spelling senor with the special character senor, click new and okay.
The AutoCorrect has saved and corrected special characters.

I was not able to replicate this bug on the HP Elitebook 840 Intel inside Core
i5 VPro Windows 7

I used Apache OpenOffice 4.1.2 Writer version to attempt to replicate the bug.
My first initial steps were the following:
Phase 1:
1. Start menu
2. All programs
3. Select options Open Office 4.1.2 Office Writer
4. I proceeded to open of up a blank document and begin to type several
characters. As you can see in the first two screenshot, the autocorrect option
was not making the necessary corrections.

--- Comment #8 from gwillia3 <gw...@progressive.com> ---
Since Microsoft Word and OpenOffice is somewhat similar, I attempt to duplicate
the error message using Word 2010.
1. Went to the Start
2. All Programs
3. Microsoft Word 2010
4. Open a new document.
5. I started typing a sentence with some misspelled words to see if it would
auto correct itself. A screenshot is attached.
6. I went to the Replace tab in the far right corner of the screen, select
Replace, and the Find and Replace tab came up. It didn’t have an option for
replacement words, like OpenOffice had for misspelled words. I had to type the
correct word in the Find What box, and Replace it with the correct spelling
word in Replace With box, and select replace.

This issue that was reported had an unexpected crash prior to this incident,
which leaves a question, did the computer crashed with an error? I would run a
full scandisk to see if there are other problems with your computer. I’ve done
this before on my own personal laptop and was able to fix it.
